Description of the initiative
In Algeria there has been little public debate on the use of genetically modified organisms in recent years, and most NGOs working in the fields of the environment, consumer protection and agriculture have limited knowledge of this
topic. There is a resulting lack of capacity for active involvement in shaping the national framework for biosfety and implementing the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. This project is therefore designed to improve information work in the field of biosafety, and boost the influence of civil society on the development of a national biosafety system.

National level activities
*Information work which aims to strengthen the skills of stakeholders: select, translate, condense and distribute the information throughout a newsletter and a web site.

*Enhancing public debate, training and exchanges

*Participation in the general biosafety process
Objective and main expected outcomes or lesson learned
*To set up an internet-based national information network for NGOs to share information and to strengthen the position of civil society groups.

*To disseminate information and the opinions of non-governmental actors to interested members of the general public using different instruments and media and launch a dialogue with decision-makers at national and international levels.

*To strengthen the capacity of AREA-ED experts and other staff members of the NGOs involved in the project in the field of biosafety, with special emphasis on risk analysis and management, the precautionary approach and liability issues.

Main outcomes
*November 2004: website created and accessible at http://www.areaed.asso.dz/biosecurite/

*Scientific and cultural demonstration on GMOs, throughout 6 Algerian cities.(16-17 April 2005)

*Educational exhibition "Les OGM en question" explaining Biodiversity, Biosafety and Ethical concepts.

*Public debate and scientific conferences

*Theatre play «Le péché ogémique » explaining in a simple and funny way controversies around GMOs.

*Presentation of the project under the GTZ side-event at MOP-COP 2 in Montreal

*Participation at several conferences at regional and international levels: WESCANA, Mediterranean and francophone African regions

Training and exchange workshops as follows:

*"Participation of the large public to the biosafety: Information and traceability". (Algiers, December 2003)

*"Impact of GMOs on peasant agriculture and participation of the public in the process of biosafety and protection of genetical resources". (Gharadaïa, September 2004)

*"Options for implementing a regulation framework for GMOs control and protection of biological resources". (Tipaza, April 2005)
